DJing, like anything, can get boring if you’re doing the same thing day in day out. But, there’s a difference between boring and planning.

You could get bored if you play the same genre, the same songs, all the time. But, playing an established or pre-planned set list at an event is just good planning, right?

Well, Z-Trip doesn’t think so. Trip argued at this summer’s EDMBiz conference that DJs need to be spontaneous with their set lists. I’m guessing there aren’t too many DJs who’d feel comfortable winging even a part of their show. The fact that we might need to deal with unexpected equipment or crowd problems is enough for most of us. Do we really want even more on our plates?

Z-Trip believes that every show should be unique. That means DJs have to be prepared to move away from any planned set list. Nicky Romero and 3Lau stand on the other side of this argument.

There are lots of good reasons why DJs should stick to what they’ve planned. You know what it takes to get the crowd going. Why would you potentially throw all that away just to be spontaneous?
