Some people never step out of their comfort zones. It’s like eating nothing but carrots. Sure, they’re tasty. I like carrots as much as the next person. But, you end up missing out on a lot of other good stuff. Musical preferences are no different.

Recently, Kendrick Lamar showed himself to be more than just a carrot lover. On October 20, he performed songs from his newest offering, To Pimp A Butterfly, with back up from no less than the National Symphony Orchestra. And they did it at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Imagine the acoustics on a song like, “Alright”.

Collaborations between classical music and other musical styles is nothing new. Metallica, Deep Purple and Portishead are a few examples. Teaming up like this showcases how similar the roots of each style are. In our heads, genre might be associated with particular stereotypes. But, really all music is simply an expression of time, place and experience.
