Remember when DJ Drama and Don Cannon‘s studio in Atlanta was raided. It happened 10 years ago, and it changed the trajectory of the mixtape. It was a huge bust. Eighty thousand CDs were seized. Those CDs represented what was probably the largest copyright infraction in the history of mixtapes up to that point.

It was an event within the DJ industry that could have killed mixtapes forever. But, it didn’t. Instead, DJs rose up, fought for their right to use copyrighted music, figured out ways of giving creators their due, and ended up bolstering the mixtape industry.

Our colleagues over at Billboard sat down with DJ Drama recently and asked him about the evolution of mixtapes. Check out his answers here.
