If you typically DJ an entire show by yourself than deciding how you’re going to start off the set and end it is no big deal. Most of us start up with an intro that tells the crowd who we are and sets the tone. Depending on the crowd – because reading what’s happening out there is vital to getting your set right – you might start off slow or go in with a hot, pumping beat.

It’s kind of a similar thing with ending the night. Depending on where the crowd is and what the energy level’s like, you might end with an upbeat crowd pleaser or a slow, it’s-time-to-wind-down-and-go-home, song.

Deciding what to start and end with becomes more complicated when you’re sharing the DJ booth. I recommend having a conversation with the other DJ. If you’re playing first, find out what he or she is starting out with. Then plan your set accordingly.

How do you decide how start and end your sets?
