There you are … in the zone … you’ve been DJing for a while, the crowd’s in the palm of your hand, your equipment and software are doing what they’re supposed to be doing. You are the DJ you always wanted to be.

And then it happens.

It starts out as one person sidling into the booth beside you. Looking over your shoulder, breathing down your neck, the drink in their hand threatening to splash over onto your stuff. It’s what The Secret DJ calls the “booth wanker.” It’s the person who wants to soak up your coolness just by hanging out in the booth with you. But then they go one step further.

They make a request.

Now, some DJs are ok with requests some of the time; some aren’t ok with requests at all. You figure out what works for you. No DJ likes it when someone who should be standing on the dance floor crowds his space in the booth.

Most professional DJs take their gigs seriously. That means they’re not there to fool around, make friends with over ambitious club patrons, or mess up their sets because someone they don’t know want to be able to tell their friends that the DJ played their song.

Have you ever had people crowd your booth for no good reason that you can think of? Share your stories with us!
