You can’t flip tv channels for long before landing on some kind of show that pits entertainers of any kind against judges. The idea behind these shows is that the judges are experts, and more or less are there to express the will of the people. Whether it’s Simon Cowell or Howard Stern, the assumption is that these people are the gate keepers of the music industry. Impress them and you’re in. They, in turn, will use and abuse you to measure your talent and your worth.

The whole thing is completely contrived. I’m not saying that the performers aren’t talented. (Ok, some aren’t!) But, the whole judging bit is fake and loaded with a misplaced sense of self-importance.

Take, for example, the exchange between X Factor’s Nick Grimshaw and DJ Anton Stephans. Grimshaw accused Stephans of being fake. “He’s just a DJ with famous friends,” he said.

What do you think? Was Grimshaw right? Maybe these talent shows have run their course and need to end. Read more here.
