We here at MMP want to do as much as we can to support our DJ community. So, we’ve put together a whole series of tips and advice on how to promote yourself and how to create a press kit.

We’ve spent a fair amount of time introducing you to a whole bunch of venues and events a DJ is likely to play. Those should give you an idea of what kinds of opportunities to look for in your own local community. Not everyone will land a club residency. But, there are a lot of other ways for you to get experience DJing in front of a crowd.

So, I thought it would be really helpful to you if I could give you some insight into what a promoter might be thinking when he’s looking to hire a DJ. If you had that information, you’d be better able to present yourself in a way that promoters expect. That would increase your chances of getting hired.

The Skilled DJ caught up with well-known Hollywood promoter, D-Rock, and asked him exactly what it is he looks for in a DJ. Here are some of his tips:

  • know the demographic you play for
  • build your name and a following
  • know the scene you want to work in
  • be authentic
  • help the promoter
