…mixing skills are secondary to your personality… Fatboy Slim

Here it is … the formula for being a great DJ!

The Burn Residency hosts DJ-producers who are just starting out and immerses them in an intensive program that teaches them how to be a great DJ. Every year, the DJs are treated to visits from the most well-known and successful DJs (like Fatboy Slim, Steve Lawler, Avicii and more) who willingly dispense their knowledge onto these young minds.

Life-long learning is key to any field and absolutely vital if you’re a DJ. Music trends come and go. You have to be able to follow the trends, but move into and beyond them as well. Your audience is made up of individuals. Individuals, as all of us can attest, are varied and multi-faceted. We don’t just listen to one kind of music. We don’t just read one genre of book. We have a whole lot of interests and some of them might even seem to conflict. As DJs, we have to make sure that we not only give the audience what they want, but that we also respect the fact that they might want something beyond the obvious.

Check out these professional tips on how to do just that. You’ll notice one thing, though … there actually isn’t just one formula for being a great DJ. So, take what you need from others’ wisdom and inject your own ideas into the mix.
