All of you, no doubt, have heard of Beatport. But, have you heard that recently the popular music streaming site has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, that its CEO Robert Sillerman stepped down and 50 employees have been shown the door.

Somewhere along the way, whatever business model the company managers were following led them to a $5.5 million in losses. Beatport began as a very specialized service for a particular sector of the dance music industry. When Sillerman’s SFX bought the company in 2013, the top brass decided to try to attract a more general audience. It was not long after that that Beatport started to bleed money.

Beatport is now on the auction block. Could DJs crowdfund to purchase the company and run it as a collaboration by DJs for DJs? Check one point of view here.
