Turntablism – the art of using records and turntables to alter sounds – has been around a lot longer than you might think. You’d have to go way back to the 1800s to find the start of it actually.

Most people listen to the genre of music they happen to like, and that’s where it ends. They shut their ears to anything newer or older.

Do you find you do that? I have to admit I do it sometimes.

As a DJ, though, whatever your personal tastes are, you have to keep your ears and eyes open to everything. You might end up spinning at a gig where the audience only likes certain performers. What do you do? How do you gauge your audience’s preferences so they stay happy?

At the same time, it’s key for you to keep adding to your collection. As a DJ, do you introduce new material by way of the art of turntablism?

Tell me how you incorporate turntablism in your sets. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out this history of turntablism. Maybe you’ll find yourself using some of the music featured.
