One of the hardest parts of acting is stepping into the shoes of the character. When you’re an actor playing a character who is also a real person (and still alive), the task is that much more complicated. That was the the problem that Corey Hawkins, who plays Dr. Dre in the film Straight Outta Compton, was up against.

Hawkins, who trained at the Juilliard school and has an extensive background as a Shakespearian actor, had to stretch himself to learn how to portray Dr. Dre in as real a manner as possible. For instance, he had to learn how to dj. And who took the time to teach him? None other than the big guy himself. Check out the video to find out about Hawkins’ experience and Dr. Dre’s thoughts on the process here.
