There’s long been a debate about what exactly the role of the DJ is. Oh sure, at its simplest, the DJ’s job is to get people on the dancefloor and make them feel comfortable in the venue from the moment they enter the room to the moment they leave (hopefully, at the end of the event).

But, isn’t that what a band has traditionally done? What about turntablists vs digital DJs? So, now it starts to get complicated. And let’s be honest, all that in-fighting we all try to ignore starts to rear its ugly head. DJs aren’t always one big, happy family. A club in LA recently banned laptops from the DJ booth. Part of the issue, they claim, is that DJs don’t know how to plug their equipment into the house system which can end up causing a lot of problems for everyone.

There might also be another issue at play here. Some DJs end up staring at their devices and equipment instead of connecting and interacting with the crowd.

Where’s the balance? Are too many DJs hiding in the booth?
