Would you wear the neon outfit the DJ in the picture above is wearing? What should a DJ wear to a gig?

What to wear might not be the most pressing question in your mind before heading out to a gig. Probably, you’re preoccupied with making sure your tech is organized, your playlists are complete, and all the other details that will have the crowd doing exactly what you want it to do are well planned and under control.

Every type of job has its accepted dress code. You wouldn’t wear a t-shirt and shorts to your finance job. Nor would you wear a suit and tie if you work in construction. In fact, a lot of jobs (and companies) have formalized dress codes. Break the rules, and you’ll be told that whatever it is you decided to don that day is inappropriate.

But, you’re a DJ. You can wear whatever you feel like, right? Well, not exactly.

There are two factors you need to consider before you get dressed for your gig. First, understand what your client expects. Is it a black tie affair? Then dress the part. Don’t have a tux? No problem. Just dress up as you would for any formal event. The point is that you don’t want to stick out. You’re there to help convey the party atmosphere within the confines of that client’s expectations.

Are you playing an outdoor festival? Then think about your own personal branding. Are you known for Hawaiian shirts and board shorts? Check your choice of dress with the organizer, if possible. Remember, you’re going to show up in pictures of the event. Make sure you’re looking your best. Image still counts for a lot.
