Just for a moment, imagine if someone said that anyone under 5 feet 7 inches in height couldn’t DJ. Or better yet, what if someone said you’re a horrible DJ because of the color of your skin, or your religion, or your sexual orientation or your cultural background?

Some people are even angry about the fact that we can’t go around saying things like that because we’ve all become slaves to political correctness. I have a few choice words for those people. The reason we can’t go around saying things like that is because they’re not true. If you’re a crummy DJ, it’s because you need more practice. The color of your skin, religion or cultural background means absolutely nothing when it comes to innate talent or learning how to do something well.

So, why do we think it’s still ok to bash women for making mistakes all DJs make at one point or another? Why is it still ok to judge a female DJ by how she looks as opposed to how well she DJs?

No answer you can think of can make any of that ok. Any time you feel like directing some sexist comment toward a woman – DJ or not – do this: replace what you were going to say with a skin color, religion, sexual orientation or cultural background. All of a sudden, your comment’s not so cool anymore.

Sexism is alive and well in the DJ, and the music, industry. Let’s put an end to it now. Read the article that inspired these thoughts here.
