Over the past decade or so, many more musicians have been using IEDs (in ear monitors). They provide better sound allowing musicians to hear exactly what they sound like no matter where they happen to wander to on the stage. Singers, especially, appreciate that sound accuracy. If anyone needs to be able to hear how they sound, it would be vocalists.

But, the question is whether IEDs are a viable solution for DJs. Are you tired of wearing headphones? Would IEDs be more comfortable to wear? Maybe. The answer to that question would be totally subjective. Some people would find them easier to wear for hours at a time than headphones, while other people would sit in the opposite camp.

The real question we have to ask about IEDs vs headphones is how well they transmit sound. DJs use monitors differently than musicians. Singers, for instance, might wear an IED in each ear. Even if they don’t, they’re still only concerned about one layer – their voice. DJs have to pay attention to various layers. They need to be able to hear cue points, mix, talk …. DJs are constantly on the move and listening to a whole host of different elements. I’m not convinced that IEDs are really up to that task.

Have you tried IEDs in place of headphones? What’s your experience been?
