Did you know that there a whole lot of women DJs who’ve been spinning for decades – women who are masters at the art of DJing? If you didn’t know before, you do now.

So, some people have started asking where those women DJs play. How come most clubs hire men? And don’t give me the old argument about women somehow not being capable of the endurance necessary to play long sets. Definitely don’t tell me that the lack of women in the industry has to do with technology. Women excel at technology at the same rate as men.

If women aren’t DJing in clubs, it’s not because there aren’t women DJs. Nor is it because they’re not capable. LA Weekly has another answer that might just be the right one. It’s that clubs and promoters just aren’t hiring women. The general idea here is that whoever does the hiring wants to attract women to the clubs. Women DJs don’t attract women; therefore, they pass women DJs over in favor of men.

Sure, except that there’s no truth backing that up. Women are more than willing to go to a woman-led event. It’s the quality of music and DJing that makes the difference. So, all you promoters out there. Hire women. You might be surprised by the support you get from the crowd.
