By now, everyone should be pretty familiar with the history of hip hop. Stories of how block parties in the 1970s in the Bronx gave rise to DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, The Sugarhill Gang, and lots of others.

But what about other kinds of dance music genres, like house, techno and dubstep?

I suppose you could say that knowing the history of the music you spin isn’t really necessary. True. But, it’s a fun bit of knowledge that also might have some hidden benefits. Knowing where a particular genre evolved from can help you mix songs from all the relevant genres.
