Most people like to listen to music within a specific genre. Check out most people’s playlists, and they might have a few tracks that are outside their favorite sound, but most of those songs are going to fall within the bounds of one particular genre.

Introducing crowds to music that they’re not particularly familiar with is one of the challenges that DJs face. We come across loads of new and different tracks. But, how, and if, you use those tracks on a playlist depends on how receptive you think the crowd is to hearing them.

But, if spinning tunes at a partyΒ was just about pleasing the crowd, DJing might get pretty boring. Imagine playing the same top 40 at every venue you were at just because that’s what the crowd wants to hear. Ok, so that’s probably not too far from reality, right?

Most DJs love to play with their music. They mix it, sample it, consume it in any number of ways. You might have to be careful how much you push a crowd to listen and dance to something outside their experience. But, there’s no reason why you should limit that level of creativity for yourself.

Redbull Thre3style University 2016 is turning its focus onto genre mixing. Any DJ can play the hits over and over. But, it takes a more creative type to be able to appreciate and use music from a different genre in his set.

Check out Redbull Thre3style’s tips on how to do that here.
