We’re heading into one of the busiest travel seasons of the year. It’s also one of the busiest work seasons for DJs. There will be parties going on practically every day throughout December and early January. Most of us will be working close to home. But, some of us will have to travel to gigs, either by car or plane.

I know it can be enough of a burden to pack up all your stuff from your largest piece of equipment right down to the cables. If you’re organized, you’ll make sure that you pack according to a checklist. That way, you can always be sure that you’ve got everything you might possibly need.

But, there’s something else that should be a huge concern for you. Security. If you’re traveling by car, make sure the car’s always locked and your equipment out of sight. It doesn’t take long for a determined thief to break in and lighten your load. If your trip is longer than a day’s drive, make sure you haul all your gear into your hotel room. Never leave anything in your car!

What if you’re flying? Be aware that everything you’re traveling with can be easily lifted. DJ Mike Huckaby had a little wake-up call recently. After flying from Detroit to New York, he opened his luggage and found a note from TSA agents. The note read, “Too many classics to be left with little or no protection.” Read about his experience here.

Always lock up your luggage! You just don’t know who will be rifling through all your valuable stuff.
