Some DJs are just too cool for school. They stand behind the decks, maybe swaying their bodies a little bit. But basically, they’re the music masters who are focused entirely on getting the crowd to dance.

Getting people dancing and having a great time is the point of a DJ. But there’s no rule that says you can’t get out there yourself and dance.Think you can’t dance. DJing and dancing really aren’t all that different. Both depend on beat awareness and synching movement to beat to feelings to energy.

Do you dance while you’re DJing?

One of the best ways to improve your DJing skills is to learn about and mix up different genres. Play a bit of country or top 40 or even rock at a hip hop event and watch the crowd respond. Check out this mash up of swing, jazz, soul, funk, and the break beats. This is the Invitational Battle Vintage vs Modern Street Dancers at Montreal Swing Riot.
