Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery … except when money and creativity is involved. That’s when things get hairy.

DJs love to copy other DJs’ mixes, and everything’s great … until it’s their own mixes that are being copied. I get all the copyright and payment issues. Those truly are legitimate concerns. But, there’s another aspect to copying each others’ work that’s actually really positive.

Listening to, and using, other people’s work actually helps us become more creative. Most of us use other DJs’ work to inspire our own work. Why reinvent the wheel over and over again when we can learn from each other and create an even better product in the end?
