Yesterday, I wrote about how to get DJs to play your mix.

Today, I want to cover how important recording your own video can be to your success as a DJ. Lots of people still listen to audio mixes. But there’s no denying that video is king. Audio mixes give the listener a really good idea of how well you know your music. Video gives viewers a really good idea of how well you know your music AND what your stage presence is like. That’s where video has a distinct advantage over audio.

You can be the best mixer ever. But, if you have no idea how to engage the crowd, you can forget about ever being hired again. DJing is a wholistic art. You really need to have mastered all the angles in order to do the job well.

Still not convinced that you should film yourself mixing? Think about these (courtesy of Digital DJ Tips):

  • videos of DJ mixes are viewed and shared more than mixtapes
  • everyone has a device now that can take excellent quality video
  • video highlights your personality; so if you make a mistake, roll with it.
  • watching yourself provides an opportunity for improvement
