Have you spent hours creating mix tapes to support your music career only to have DJs ignore you? Follow these tips, and you should see a welcome change to that pattern.

make awesome music

Yes, I know, whether music is good or bad is almost entirely in the ear of the listener. There are some things you can do. Figure out when you’d like the DJ to play your music. Do you want your song to start the night or be mixed in during peak dance periods? Look at the qualities of the music typically played at those times and try to copy it.

master mixing

You really wanted your mixtape to be ready for some big event. But, you ran out of time. That’s ok, right? Just throw it together and hand it to the DJ who’s sure to play it. Well, not quite. If all the DJ hears is sloppy mixing, you can kiss your chance goodbye. Be realistic about the time and equipment you’ll need to put together a truly primo piece of work.

give the DJ the choice

Try to hand the DJ a useful service pack. Load it with a clean and dirty version of your music, acapella, instrumental, 8-bar intro (clean and dirty), a radio edit, and a club mix. That’s a lot of stuff to hand over. So, make sure it’s all in an easily accessible format, like a zip file.
