This question comes up every now and then. Every DJ wonders at some point or another when he can actually call himself a DJ. Is it when you’ve landed your first gig? Is it when you’ve practiced to the point of expertise? Is it when you’ve been DJing for a year or more?

Ultimately, I’d argue that you’re a DJ the minute you decide you want to be one. That’s when you start gathering up equipment, practicing, and learning as much as possible about your craft. The truth is that there’s no one point at which you stop learning and suddenly turn into a full-fledged DJ. Learning and improving should be ongoing throughout your entire career.

I have to say, though, that if you’ve only been spinning in the confines of your bedroom, you probably haven’t yet attained the full status of a DJ. A huge and important part of DJing is playing in front of people. Once you’ve done that – even if it’s only your first gig, and even if you’re not being paid for it – you’re still an official DJ.

What do you think? Where’s the line for you?
