If you were to ask many young people starting out in the creative arts, like music (and DJ-ing, in particular), they’ll tell you that it’s really hard to get a foot in the door. So, with that in mind, Nicholas Yiu, a student at Penn State, and his friend Matt Hong at the University of California, Berkeley, created Mixathon48.

The idea revolves around making three short music files available to anyone who wishes to participate. All they have to do is download the files, create an original mix, and upload the finished mix online.

The team will judge all submissions, and the winner will receive a bunch of cool prizes.

Once again, the internet is the great leveler. The Mixathon48 is a fabulous way to encourage anyone to engage with music of all genres. You don’t have to have studied an instrument for years to be thought of as a musician. Nor do you have to be a working DJ with years of experience.
