You might have heard that audio is out and video is in. Well, that is true to a certain extent. People love watching videos on Facebook and YouTube. It’s for that reason that Facebook and Instagram have added and improved the video function on their platforms.

The emphasis on video has made it harder for DJs to share their SoundCloud or MixCloud mixes. “Pasting in a link to your mixes on these sites no longer generate (sic) a built-in player” (DJ Tech Tools).

So, you’re a DJ and you want to promote your mixes. What do you do now? Making a video of your mixes might be an option for some. But, you’re going to have to keep two factors in mind.

First, get a handle on how to film a good video. Most mobile devices take decent quality video, so that’s not so much an issue. But, knowing where to place the camera and how to move it is key. You don’t need to have a diploma in cinematography. But, you should check out how to make your video stand out for viewers.

Second, YouTube, Facebook and Vimeo (and increasingly other platforms) come down pretty hard on even the slightest whiff of copyright infringement. You’ve added a few seconds of some popular song? They’ll shut you down. It’s hard to get views if no one can see or hear your stuff.

So, how do you promote your stuff? There’s no denying it. That task is getting harder and harder. Here are some tips to help you out.
