So, who did invent re-mixing? P. Diddy claimed “we” did on his 2002 album called We Invented The Remix.

Magnetic Magazine claims that the “idea of remixing” was actually invented in Jamaica in the 1960s.

I say they’re both wrong.

The act of taking something that already exits, shuffling the pieces around, and arriving at something that’s your own interpretation of the original is not new. It’s been around for as long as humans have been around. People in every part of the world have always taken songs, stories, instrumentals, and re-arranged the pieces to create something that relates better to their own experiences and thoughts.

It’s a fundamental part of being human. The only thing that’s different about how early peoples did it and how we do it today is the equipment we use.

From simply changing voices, melodies and storylines to using digital equipment – the basic act of re-interpreting what we hear to suit our tastes is nothing new. It’s old. But being old does not mean it’s no longer useful or important.

We continue to make re-mixes because it gives us a perfect way to express our own voices. Check out the article here.
