It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything new from The Weeknd. I guess he heard us wondering when he’d come out with something new. The Weeknd has just released his newest single “Starboy,” which is the title track of his upcoming album.

His new album might feature Daft Punk since they were in studio with him. What’s new? Well, he as a new haircut. Yes, it’s true. The Weeknd has discarded his trademark dreadlocks in favor of short hair. The photo for “Starboy” was taken by well-known photographer Nabil, who also photographed Frank Ocean and K’naan.

The Weeknd hasn’t revealed much about this upcoming album, but he has said his inspiration came from the Smiths, Bad Brains, Talking Heads, Prince, and De Barge. Wow, how’s that for genre surfing? He’s also planning to incorporate even more of his Ethiopian linguistic roots than he has up to now. So, definitely keep an ear out for that.

Music videos haven’t been simple recordings of live performances in a very long time. Now, The Weeknd seems to want to push those boundaries even further. Be prepared for something a little different. When asked about his cinematic influences, he mentioned David Cronenberg, David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, and Martin Scorsese.

The Weeknd hasn’t released any information yet about when the rest of the album will become available. However, you can buy the single on iTunes.
