Winning a DJ competition should not signal the end of creativity. Good DJs don’t have time, or the inclination, to rest on their laurels. Keeping the creative fires burning is essential. So many of the DJs who’ve won competitions, whether it’s the DMC World Championships or the Red Bull Thre3style World Championships, have gone on to create even better work.

Eskei83 is a case in point. This German DJ obviously worked really hard to climb to the top of the Red Bull Thre3style World Championship in 2014. The key to that success was a desire to learn all that he could about two things – how to get the most from his equipment and how to widen his knowledge and scope of different kinds of music.

We all know there are DJs out there who only listen to hip hop, who only play hip hop, and only lean toward only certain hip hop performers. That narrow scope might be fine for a while. it might be really entertaining for club-goers who are only interested in hearing their favorite artists over and over. But there comes a point when a DJ has to begin developing a feel for other genres.

Otherwise, you risk being relegated to the sidelines when your audience moves on to some other flavor of the month.

I’ve got lots of tips on how to improve your DJ game. Check them out here and here. (Use the search function to find even more).

I also thought you’d get a lot of inspiration from the top DJs, themselves. Check out Eskei83’s tips for being the best DJ you can be here.
