Where were you during the summer of 1990? If you were living in the Bronx, you were witnessing first-hand the transformation of Hip Hop from its days as block party entertainment into a money-making industry darling.

Do you think something was lost in the process? Maybe you’re feeling nostalgic for those days of MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice.

VH1 premiered an original movie last night called The Breaks. It’s based on journalist Dan Charnas’ 2010 bestseller The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop documenting the rise of rap music and it’s live or die moment in 1990.
