Junior: Mom, Dad, I know what I want to be when I grow up!

Mom and Dad look at their son, picturing a clean and busy law office in their minds. They share a proud smile.

Junior: I’m going to be a DJ!

You can imagine what happened to Mom and Dad’s proud smile at that particular proclamation. Well, take heart. Maybe Junior’s choice isn’t so bad, and it doesn’t have to be either/or. Maybe mom and dad can still look proudly on their son’s choice. The reality today is that the majority of people will not be able to land a prime job that will keep them employed until they’re ready to retire. In fact, most people switch careers numerous times throughout their working lives. Some do it for financial reasons. Some do it because they realize that their current job or career doesn’t satisfy them anymore.

Something else has changed, too. There’s tremendous value to having multiple careers – even at the same time. Human beings aren’t cardboard cut-outs. Each of us has multiple interests and talents that can be developed. Each of those interests ends up informing our current careers and how well we do our jobs. So, why not do it, especially if you can get paid for it.

So, if you think you might not be able to DJ for the rest of your life, there’s good news. Judge Jules, aka Jules O’Riordan, describes his journey to expand his DJ career to include his interest in also becoming a lawyer.
