Is this you? You’ve spent a huge amount of your waking hours practicing your DJ skills. You’ve bought your DJ equipment. You’re all ready to go. But, the phone never rings.

What is going on?

Sorry to tell you this, but the field really is crowded. That’s not to say that everyone’s a great DJ. But, what happens is that you’re forced to compete against hundreds of people who suddenly want to be DJs. Are they as good at it as you are? Some are, some aren’t. To the hiring manager, you’re just another DJ asking him for a chance. How is he supposed to know that you’re different? How are you supposed to find gigs in this kind of atmosphere?

Lucky for you, there are a few things that you can do that will help you stand apart and above the crowd. Do this:

  • Give tremendous thought to your playlists. Don’t just rely on the hottest music that everyone’s heard a hundred times already. Define who you are through the music you play.
  • No matter how many (or few) gigs you get, keep practicing.
  • Identify the venues you want to DJ and visit them often as a patron. Get to know the staff.
  • Develop a thick skin. You’re going to hear a lot more rejections, at least for the first year or two, until you become better known.
  • Allow strangers to hear your mixes and comment honestly. Take their comments seriously and improve where you can.
  • Social media is important. But, don’t let it take over your life. Focus your social media posts on your DJing skills.
