I’ve written about roots before, and I’m doing it again now. I don’t mean to repeat myself. It’s just that understanding where our modern sounds came from is really important.

Being exposed to music and musical ideas that came before what we’re listening to today presents DJs with an amazing opportunity. Imagine having at your fingertips sounds from a long time ago that most people have forgotten. We’re so immersed in whatever’s hot today that it’s really easy to forget how good the older stuff still is.

Recently, DJ Mag published a kind of a retrospective chronicling the evolution of music as it relates to what we love to listen to today. They’ve included a number of great music videos that had me saying, oh yeah – I remember that! Call me weird, but my favorite one is this one. Co-creator Delia Derbyshire opened the door to machine-made sounds in dance music.
