DJs are nothing if not good listeners. With a sense of hearing as keenly developed as that, I know we’ll be able to get to the bottom of this.

The accusation: Flume has stolen some of Skrillex’s music.

Recently, Flume dropped a preview from his upcoming album, Skin. After listening to it, fans began calling him out. They claim that the 40:50 mark of Skrillex’s “Beachlife” sounds exactly like the 1:34 mark of Flume’s preview.

Well, I listened to it, and I think someone got their second and minute marks wrong. I did notice a similarity at the beginning of both songs. For me, the jury’s still out on this one. But, it does bring up another point. From a larger perspective, how much of what we create is actually original? So much music has come before, we can’t help but be influenced by it. When threads of those songs we’ve heard make their way into our productions, is that the same as “stealing” someone’s work? Where are we supposed to draw the line?
