Do you ever get the feeling that technology has progressed to a point where it has made it easy for anyone to call themselves a DJ?

Yeah, it feels that way. There are so many ways for a person to fudge their transitions, mixes, song choices … you name it … until it’s hard to tell whether or not he actually knows what he’s doing.

All I need to say is “Paris Hilton”.

But before you get all depressed and think that there’s just no point to it anymore and real DJs can’t get any respect, let me suggest one thing. This is nothing new.

Every occupation that has trended develops a contingent that thinks there’s nothing to it. Those people call themselves DJs without understanding how the way they do the job is significantly different than the people who really have worked hard to develop their DJing talent.

It’s so irritating, though, isn’t it? These wannabe DJs aren’t interested in putting in the years of work. Nor are they able to hear the difference between them and a dedicated DJ.

But, like I said, you have them in any industry that suddenly seems cool and popular. Do they serve any useful purpose? Well, this may be a stretch, but I try to look at it this way. Anytime I come across a DJ who has clearly jumped on the bandwagon, I’m reminded of how well I do my job. Maybe that sounds a little conceited. But, I’m happy to say that I’m proud of the work I’ve done over the years and the effort I’ve put into learning my craft.
