One of the biggest complaints that DJs have about their careers is that it’s so hard to use their mixtapes to find work. Sure, you can post your mixes to SoundCloud or a similar service. But, what you really want to do is put that mixtape into hands that will also offer you a contract.

That’s where the problem lies. Hiring managers receive hundreds of mixtapes across their desks. That’s a brutal level of competition. Ask yourself, what makes mine stand out.

  • Send it to someone who wants it. Giving your mixtape to a hiring manager who isn’t actually hiring could be your issue. Make sure that you hand it over to someone who actually wants to listen to it.
  • Send it to the right person. Sometimes it’s just really easy to hand your mixtape over to the closest person. Be aware that your mixtape might never make it to the right person. Sometimes it’s really easy to hand it over to the person you think is the hiring manager. Again, your mixtape might not ever make it to the right person. In both cases, do your research. Find out who the right person is, and make personal contact with them before handing over your mixtape.
  • Package it. Don’t just hand over a mixtape and expect the hiring manager to remember your name, face, and any other identifying qualities. Put together a professional press kit. That should definitely get their attention.

Over to you: What do you want to know about how to get hired?
