What is tagging?

Tagging, at its most basic, is giving each track a detailed description. So, each track in your collection is going to be organized by genre, tempo and other identifying features.

But, tagging goes even deeper than those basic identifiers. The best DJs will also mark down any features that will help them place the track into the right playlist. Think, for instance, whether a particular track will work best at the beginning of the event or at the end. What kind of emotions and energy does the track draw out of an audience. That’s the kind of deep information that’s not visible to an audience, but that will result in them loving your work. Not to mention the fact that any other DJs in the room will be wanting to photograph your playlist in order to figure out your secrets.

Do you tag? Do you do it old school with a pen and paper? Or do you have a favorite software?
