There’s quite an amazing and ambitious idea behind musicmap. This is the brainchild of Kwinten Crauwels, and the purpose of musicmap is to literally plot the evolution of all genres across time on a map.

Crauwels and his colleagues spent the last seven years documenting every music genre they came across in their extensive research. They noted where those genres emerged from and how they cross into other genres. The point of the project “is to focus on the delicate balance between comprehensibility, accuracy and accessibility,” Crauwels reports on his website. He continues, “musicmap is a platform in search for the perfect balance of popular music genres to provide a powerful tool for educational means or a complementary framework in the field of music metadata and automatic taxonomy.”

So, as a DJ, music is your greatest asset. The wider your knowledge of music genres, the better you will be at mixing and creating new music. Spinning popular music that you know the crowd will like is easy. Try stepping out of your comfort zone by incorporating music that’s outside the usual genre within which you tend to work. You don’t have to play the whole song, but taking a bar from this or that will intrigue the crowd and keep your creative juices flowing.
