I consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to hooking up cables to equipment. Actually, I should say I’m good at troubleshooting and problem-solving. I can guess which cable goes into which receptacle, and if I don’t get the desired effect then I’m happy to spend some time detaching and re-attaching cables in different configurations.

I admit that not everyone gets their kicks that way. Ok, almost no one does.

So, what do you do when your faced with connecting multiple cables to multiple pieces of equipment … and the cables are blue, yellow, red or green? How do yo figure it out?

If you’re wondering how to tell if you’re system uses balanced or unbalanced audio, or how to tell the difference and uses of an RCA and more, I’ve got the goods for you.

Jon Hersom has written a really good and informative article on each of the cables you might come across as you set up your gear.
