I’m going to get myself a t-shirt. It’s going to read, “Everyone’s a DJ!” I mean that sarcastically, of course. Like anything, DJ-ing may look easy, but it ain’t, folks. Oh sure, anyone can stand in front of a couple of turntables, a laptop, a mixer … you know, the usual DJ stuff. But, once you start rolling out those tunes, dropping wordplay, and controlling the flow of the energy in a room, all of a sudden, it’s not so easy, is it?

I came across an article on thump.vice.com claiming that anyone can be a DJ in 5 steps. If nothing else, it made for a good laugh. Ok, tell me if you’ve heard this comment before: “Anyone can be a DJ. All you guys do is twiddle some knobs!” Or this gem: “Anyone can be a DJ. All you guys do is bribe your friends to pack the booth!”

Come on, all that’s true for some people. But, if they really don’t know how to DJ, it becomes painfully evident immediately. There’s talent behind that technology. Like anything else, just because you don’t understand what goes into producing something great, sure doesn’t mean just anyone should jump up on stage and embarrass themselves. Go get schooled!
