I really wanted to answer that question with the conversation ender\u00a0&#8220;Who really cares?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not really a fair answer, though. The fact is that it&#8217;s important to know the roots of what we&#8217;re listening to now. Understanding where a style of music or an approach to a track came from adds depth to the work. Granted, not knowing any of that really doesn&#8217;t change how the music affects you. If you like a song, then you like it regardless of whether you get that the base line is influenced by 1970s funk or not.<\/p>\n<p>The value, I think, of recognizing where music comes from is that knowing exposes us to more genres and musical styles than we otherwise might have found on our own.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Bill Brewster over at\u00a0<em>Mix Mag<\/em> tried to answer the question of who invented the remix.
