Usually, it’s hard to know exactly when a movement started. Most events that go on to become important to people develop a kind of mythology. In other words, no one really knows or remembers how the whole thing might have begun.<\/p>\n

Hip Hop’s a little different.<\/p>\n

The beginnings of Hip Hop in the ’70s have been well documented<\/a> as has the contribution of one DJ Kool Herc.<\/p>\n

The story is that Herc “spun records at a birthday party in the rec room of his building … in the Bronx, and that’s when Hip-Hop started” (HipHopWired<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Well, in honor of that, the City Council decided to commemorate that humble beginning by re-naming Herc’s old stomping grounds “Hip-Hop Boulevard”.<\/p>\n
