But, as the new excellent new documentary \u201cAs I AM: The Life and Times of DJ AM\u201d shows, Goldstein had deep-seated demons that stayed with him his whole life \u2014 and eventually led to the 36-year-old star\u2019s death via overdose in his Manhattan apartment in 2009.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1170\" height=\"878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B1sorGRfi1U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The movie, which premieres at Tribeca Film Festival on Friday, charts AM\u2019s life and zooms in on not only what he achieved but also the often-grim story behind his success. \u201cIt was intended to be more about the person than the star,\u201d director Kevin Kerslake tells The Post. Here, five things we learned from the documentary:<\/p>\n<p>He had a messed-up family life.<\/p>\n<p>AM was born amid parental turmoil. Before he was conceived, his mother, Andrea Gross, came home and found her husband having sex with another man. She left, had an affair and got pregnant \u2014 but returned to her husband, leading him to believe that the child (AM) was his right up until birth. \u201cA lot of the demons he was dealing with \u2014 especially in later life \u2014 came from family circumstances,\u201d explains Kerslake. \u201cPart of the deal I made with his mother in making this film was that we wouldn\u2019t sugarcoat any of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was once a member of Crazy Town.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T7cRo48Y2ac?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Back when rap metal was all the rage, AM was a member of the Los Angeles crew, providing scratches on their 1999 debut album, \u201cGift of Game,\u201d which also featured \u201cButterfly,\u201d their sole big hit.<\/p>\n<p>He almost committed suicide in his early 20s.<\/p>\n<p>Despite making a name for himself early in life in the hip-hop world, AM battled a severe crack addiction, which culminated in a suicide attempt \u2014 which failed only because the gun jammed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p1X6lDOIWWg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>AM signed up to do the MTV intervention reality show \u201cGone Too Far\u201d in 2009 to help other addicts. But being up close and personal with drugs, as well as his own torment over surviving a 2008 plane crash alongside Blink 182\u2019s Travis Barker, contributed to a descent back into usage. \u201cHe wanted to help other people out of the hole,\u201d says Kerslake. \u201cIn a sense, he martyred himself with the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He played a huge part in the current popularity of EDM.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1170\" height=\"878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_n8BQ4Gtgys?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Thanks to the way he popularized mash-ups, his big-money bookings in Las Vegas and his own club LAX (which he co-owned), DJ AM is a key factor in dance music\u2019s dominance. \u201cAM was the first rock-star DJ \u2014 there wasn\u2019t anyone who had his skill set, and he\u2019s one of the reasons that the culture is flourishing,\u201d adds Kerslake.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just a shame AM\u2019s not here to see it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-excerpt\">On the surface, DJ AM (a\u200ak\u200aa Adam Goldstein) had it all.
