Sometimes success comes because you know the right people. Ultimately, though, the right people can only do so much. After that, success depends entirely on how talented you are and how well you manage your business and your life.

Talent might come to us naturally and through regular practice. But all the rest comes through hooking up with people who are capable of offering us the best advice.

Pam the Funkstress may well have been the first female DJ to make it big. She’s been at it since the late ’80s when people like Q Bert and Boots Riley took her under their wing and gave her the space to learn, experiment and foster her creativity.

Lately, she’s partnered with Prince, touring with him, playing his aftershows and working up his audiences into a frenzy of excitement like only she could do.

Pam was interviewed recently, and she revealed her influences, how she got her start and what keeps her going in this difficult but rewarding industry.
