Founded by DJ Tina T, Camp Spinoff has been running for 10 years as the only sleep away DJ camp for kids 13-17 years old. Every year 50 kids, dozens of camp counselors and some celebrity special guests come together for a week of creativity, enrichment workshops and most importantly, fun! Camp Spinoff is truly unlike any other experience available as the non-profit combines a traditional outdoor summer camp with the latest innovation in DJ and music production technology. Campers had an opportunity to participate in craft projects and challenges which promoted team building and leadership. They would also work together to produce full songs and curate DJ sets, giving them an artistic platform and a chance to learn from their camp counselors and peers.
When we arrived to camp in Ojai, California we found campers learning the fun steps of salsa, working on beats in Abelton, or using Rekordbox compatible equipment to practice their mixing skills. The energy was high and the smiles were wide as campers and counselors enjoyed a musical oasis about 1.5 hours north of Los Angeles. Throughout our stay we saw everything from pool parties with sets by legends such as DJ Vice, archery competitions, guest talks and sets from A-Trak, and so much more.
There was never a dull moment; even the lunches had special guest sets from camp counselors such as DJ As-Is, Michael Basic and DJ Rockaway. Campers had cool activities such as the As-Is Something Out of Something Else (S.O.S.E) challenge where the kids had to go around and record live samples from the camp grounds and make an original song. They used everything from the sound of frogs chirping to vocal samples of their peers and counselors to make some fire hits!
Producer and podcaster DJ AmRo facilitated a daily Camp Spinoff podcast which interviewed campers, special guests, and counselors. This gave everyone from the outside an inside look into why Camp Spinoff was so important to everyone involved. You hear from special guests such as Sour Milk and DJ Carisma from Power 106 who talk about their personal experiences throughout their careers as well as why platforms such as Camp Spinoff are so important to connect the DJ community. You also hear from both new and returning campers about how meaningful it is to have people in their corner that support them using music as an outlet. You will laugh, cry and get all of the feels after listening through this years CSO podcast. You can check it here on any platform and if you have Apple Podcast you can download them directly to your device here.
The campers and counselors worked hard throughout the day completing all kinds challenges and activities. No one believes in the the phrase “work hard, play harder” more than DJs so you can bet that Camp Spinoff had some of the best parties a summer camp has ever seen! We are talking everything from silent headphones to full on pyro-technics to give the kids an experience they will never forget. It is a reminder to show our youth that they deserve nothing short of the best. If you show them the moon they’ll shoot for the stars.
There are a lot of moving parts and a lot of work that has to be put into Camp Spinoff so DJ Tina T has developed a great team of passionate professionals and sponsors to help make it all possible. Sponsors included Clif Mojo (Clif Bar), Pioneer, Sound Off (Silent Disco Headphones), LA City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Scratch DJ Academy LA, Ableton, and many more! MyMp3Pool also gave out free memberships to the campers, some MMP swag and put on a workshop for the campers giving them some insight into music discovery! Outside of the major Camp Spinoff Sponsors you would find many individual and small organizations donating to the Camp Spinoff Scholarship which helped many kids receive an invaluable experience without having to come out of their [parents] pockets. If you would like to get involved or donate head over to the Camp Spinoff website.
Just like any camp, leaving your newfound and returning friends can be difficult. In just a few days it is easy to forge lifetime relationships when you have like minded people. The impact Camp Spinoff has on the youth and adults that help make it possible is unlike anything we have seen before. This is one of those things that you never want to end but since it does, it drives everyone to push for the next one and make it even better than the last. We absolutely cannot wait until the 11th edition of Camp Spinoff coming at you the summer of 2020. If you know any aspiring DJs or musicians that would like to be a part of Camp Spinoff please have their parents check the registration site for the next open enrollment!
