I’ve written a lot about the value of vinyl to DJs – scratching, turntablism … There’s another aspect of vinyl that I haven’t really touched on too much: that’s playing the songs on those records in your set lists.

Spinning vinyl on a set of turntables is a no-brainer. But, what if you’re the organized sort, and you want to set your playlists up ahead of time. Or maybe your turntables are out for repair. Whatever. The point is that it sometimes makes sense to save those songs to a playable digital format.

A decade ago (give or take), transferring music from analog to digital was impossible. You would’ve had to re-buy all your records as CDs and later as digital files. Now, there’s equipment that can be bought for a nominal fee that will help you keep most of your money in your wallet and still allow you access to all those songs that still exist solely on vinyl.

How do you merge your vinyl and digital collections?

Zernell Gillie (aka Grimy) of Crate Diggers and Grimy Edits has devised 8 tips on how to rip vinyl to a playable digital format. Check it out here.
