It just goes round and round.

It happens every year. Somewhere in the world a DJ wakes up on Christmas morning and decides to play havoc with the listeners.

Actually, that’s not true. What happens is that every year at Christmas the same story circulates through the various traditional media and social media outlets about Joe Kohlhofer, a DJ at an Austrian radio station, who stepped into his booth and turned on the mic. The story goes that he told his listeners that there just wasn’t enough Christmas spirit in the world, and that he had the answer. He would then proceed to play Wham’s “Last Christmas” 24 times in a row. That’s a total of 2 hours non-stop.

Did this actually happen? Who knows.

What is true and profoundly sad is the news that broke yesterday. George Michael, one of Wham’s founders (with Andrew Ridgley), died on Christmas morning. Whatever you may have thought of Wham or George Michael’s later solo work, there’s no denying that he had one of the most powerful and soulful voices in the music industry.
