It’s really easy to forget the roots of something once it becomes popular and starts to change. Turntablism is one such thing.

Turntablism is so hot now. DJs have an ongoing love-hate debate about the value of vinyl in this digital age. Regardless, what’s really valuable in the end is to have an understanding of where DJing came from. It’s no different than studying the roots of Hip Hop or Disco or Rock or Classical or whatever. The more you know about what you do, the better you are at layering sounds and techniques and, as a result, creating unique and interesting music.

I came across a pretty comprehensive article that follows the history of DJing and turntablism that should give you a deeper understanding of why you do what you do and how to do it better.

Let me know if you have any questions about what you read, and I’ll answer them.
