Just the other day, I posted the latest Top 100 best DJs list. There are tons of lists out there. What purpose do they actually serve? If you see that Hardwell is number one on some list, does that make you more likely to buy his music? According to Hardwell, those lists can be more damaging than you might have ever thought.

He was at a Revealed Records label party in Amsterdam when he grabbed the mic and ranted about DJ Mag’s Top 100 lists. Hardwell argued that these kinds of lists force fans to pay attention only to the top DJs. Other DJs, who score lower on the list, tend to get ignored not just by potential fans, but by event organizers. The idea here is that only higher ranking DJs will bring in the crowds. So, there’s no point in hiring a lower ranking DJ to play a big festival. As a result, lower ranking DJs never get a chance to expose their talents to a larger audience.

Do these lists influence who you listen to? Check out the video of Hardwell’s rant here.
