Usually, it’s hard to know exactly when a movement started. Most events that go on to become important to people develop a kind of mythology. In other words, no one really knows or remembers how the whole thing might have begun.

Hip Hop’s a little different.

The beginnings of Hip Hop in the ’70s have been well documented as has the contribution of one DJ Kool Herc.

The story is that Herc “spun records at a birthday party in the rec room of his building … in the Bronx, and that’s when Hip-Hop started” (HipHopWired).

Well, in honor of that, the City Council decided to commemorate that humble beginning by re-naming Herc’s old stomping grounds “Hip-Hop Boulevard”.
